Our work

MENTORA attempts to support and strengthen the oppurtunities for young women in Guatemala through empowerment, education and mentoring. We offer economical contribution and a personal mentorship to women aged 18 and 30 who are in a situation where they need support to start, continue or complete their studies.

What does the word empowerment mean to us at MENTORA? By the word empowerment, we mean the real opportunity to realize those dreams, thoughts and visions that all of us have. It might be to speak a new language, be able to take a loan at the bank to buy a house, take a driver’s license, travel abroad, give our children a good and safe childhood or educate ourselves to apply for our dream job. MENTORA wants to participate and be part of each and one of those individual processes, helping to push through for that dream to come true.

MENTORA is actively working to counter the “colonial gaze” . The organization would like to raise awareness about the complex situations that aid organizations find themselves within.  We work to ensure that those who receive our support are not portrayed as passive receivers and instead we attempt to embrace an equal perspective between all who are involved in the project.

As part of this work, we are conducting a workshop on the situation for women in Guatemala and postcolonial perspectives cat upper secondary schools in Sweden during 2020.
